People Operations Manager

As our People Operations Manager, you’ll play a central role in building the systems, processes, and programs that help our team thrive. This is a highly cross-functional position that supports everything from onboarding and systems management to performance cycles and employee experience programming.You’ll work closely with our Head of People to deliver an exceptional, high-impact people function that scales with the company. This is a unique opportunity to shape the foundational culture and operations of a fast-growing, remote-first team.
YOU WILL:
Improve People Systems & Processes
- Administer and improve HR systems (Rippling, Lattice, Notion, Google Workspace)
- Manage core workflows: onboarding/offboarding, compensation updates, employee data accuracy
- Identify and streamline manual processes through documentation and automation
Manage Onboarding
- Run onboarding end-to-end: preboarding, welcome logistics, E-Verify, systems access, and comms
- Coordinate with recruiting and hiring managers to deliver smooth 30/60/90 plans
- Track and improve onboarding experience across cohorts
Iterate on Performance & Feedback
- Execute performance cycles: setup, scheduling, reminders, and tracking
- Maintain templates, performance documentation, and historical data
- Partner with the Head of People on engagement surveys and feedback tools
Administer Benefits & Compliance
- Administer employee benefits, 401(k), leaves, and open enrollment
- Answer employee questions on benefits and time off
- Maintain HR documentation and ensure compliance with legal requirements
Contribute to Culture & Experience
- Plan and coordinate company and team offsites, Lunch & Learns, and async team events
- Manage employee milestones (birthdays, anniversaries, shoutouts)
- Support culture initiatives via Slack, swag, and internal programming
YOU HAVE:
- 3–5+ years of experience in People Operations, HR, or similar roles within high-growth or remote-first companies.
- Experience managing core HR systems and tools (e.g., Rippling, Lattice, G Suite, Slack).
- Detail-oriented project manager who thrives on systems, documentation, and execution.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills — able to work with a wide range of teammates and leaders.
- High integrity, discretion, and empathy — you care deeply about people and want to make work better.
- Bonus: Experience supporting performance management, learning and development, or engagement programs.

- Ali Penny Fiedler, Head of People: Ali joined Counterpart as Head of People following a 13 + year stint at Yext, most recently as VP of Recruiting Programs. Her experience is rooted in building and scaling teams with the best people. She’s previously built and led teams in Sales, Client Support, Operations, Client Success and most recently designed and managed a Rotational Program.
- Chris Shafer, Chief of Staff: Chris is a published scientific author, having studied the neural correlates of gratitude at the lauded Brain and Creativity Institute. He has since helped to launch numerous businesses in which he held a variety of critical roles from product management to business operations to strategic partnerships. Chris received his bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Southern California.
- Macey Hallstedt, People Operations Manager: Macey leads recruiting, onboarding, benefits, compliance, and employee experience at Counterpart. With past roles at Reforge, UC Berkeley Global, and CEA Study Abroad, she brings a strong background in operations and culture-building. Macey holds a B.A. in Communications Studies from the University of Michigan and speaks fluent Spanish. She played college tennis and still enjoys coaching at her local courts.

- Work from Anywhere: Counterpart is a fully distributed company, meaning there is no office. We allow employees to work from wherever they do their best work, and invite the team to meet in person a couple times per year.
- Home Office Allowance: As a new employee, you will receive a $300 allowance to set up your home office with the necessary equipment and accessories.
- Wellness stipend: $100 per month to spend toward an item or service that supports your wellness (i.e. massage or gym membership, meditation app subscription, etc.)

Our estimated pay range for this role is $115,000 to $130,000. Base salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, market data, location, internal equitability, and experience.
